It seems that the print industry is settling into two camps at the moment: those who diversify their offering and those who don’t.

It’s become such a talking point that one of the keynote speakers at Pira International’s recent Global Print Markets event made it the crux of his speech.

According to Dr Ronnie Davis, vice-president and chief economist at Printing Industries of America, printing companies need to work on either expanding out their offering and working on a more diverse range of products and services (such as print and brand management) or they need to become better at what they do to the point of being able to offer better service to clients as a result of such expertise. (see http://www.printweek.com/bulletin/printweekdailybulletin/article/1097618/print-companies-urged-become-diversified-specialists/)

The diversification route seems to be popular with litho print becoming just one of many strings to the bow of many print companies. As a marketing services provider, Mulberry Square is a good example of how this can be successfully achieved. By expanding out from just print into areas such as design, branding, eCommerce, marketing support and print management, the client relationship becomes more involved over a wider area of interaction and the printing company becomes more of a marketing partner than just someone to buy cards and letterheads from.

However, the specialist approach is where many print companies see the future. A niche approach gives the print company greater efficiencies, specialist knowledge and expertise which can be hard to find elsewhere. As a result of this, specialist print suppliers can and should give better customer service (and in most cases better value for money) through offering high-level advice and support that general printers may be unable to give.

Both directions have merit (and benefits to clients) and it’s up to the respective print companies to show their clients how they can more effectively and efficiently support their business.

The British Printing Industries Federation has recognised these two distinct directions and has reacted by offering more advice, support and training for these two key strategic approaches.

So, Dr Davis’ urge to become “better, not bigger” has already become a key facet of the wider printing industry’s business philosophy.

It’s not been easy to escape the Wikileaks drama over the past few weeks, but for anyone who has managed to avoid the torrent of scandal, controversy and general hysteria, here is a quick breakdown of events:

Wikileaks is a non-profit organisation aimed at exposing the controversial material the politicians would rather we never saw. They have won numerous accolades, including The Economist’s New Media Award in 2008. On the surface it sounds like a very noble cause, and many would argue it is exactly that, but the website does have its critics and their voice has become considerably louder in recent weeks. On November 28th the increasingly bold website released the first of 251,287 leaked U.S. diplomatic cables, and for the US Government a line had definitely been crossed.

wikileaks cables

Pressure was immediately placed on the companies linked with Wikileaks to cut ties. The website’s hosting company was the first to succumb, forcing Wikileaks to shift to a backup domain in Switzerland. The focus was then directed towards the lifeblood of the organisation – cash donations.

Mastercard, Visa and PayPal soon fell in line, closing off all Wikileaks accounts. Initially efforts were made to disguise the payment failures as mere system errors due to heavy Christmas traffic. But the message was clear: “Julian Assange, you’re on your own.”

So what’s the connection between all this controversy and Magento E-commerce? Well as the internet takes an increasingly central role in our daily existence, this saga illustrates both the power and the fragility of the virtual world. In just a few years it facilitated the development of the most advanced journalistic and whistle-blowing phenomenon the world has ever known, and yet in just a matter of days that same tool had almost brought the movement to its knees, and it wasn’t to end there….

operation payback

On December 8th, internet hackers jumped to the aid of Wikileaks, executing a series of revenge attacks against the payment providers, Mastercard, PayPal and Visa. The strategy, referred to as Operation Payback, involved a technique known as Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) which successfully prevented customers from using the online payment giants.

Can any payment provider claim to be immune to such attacks? Of course not. And that’s the point. The only action any e-commerce website reliant on such online transfers can take is to ensure they are not dependent on one single provider. Enter Magento E-commerce.

Magento E-commerce is an open source platform that offers multi-payment options, meaning that if a customer cannot use one particular method, other providers are on hand. Does this provide a complete solution? No. If simultaneous attacks occur against every provider then the problem remains. But what Magento E-commerce can do is mitigate the risk by ensuring that scenario is the ONLY scenario in which payments would fail. As long as there is one provider up and running, you can continue to do business.

If you have any thoughts concerning this recent drama and other ways online retailers can keep risk of downtime to a minimum, I’d love to hear them. Just leave your comments below.

Thanks,

James.
