Melton Borough Council gives Green Light for Recycling Initiative
We shall definitely be using it as an example of best practice.”
Emma Marsh (WRAP)
Background
Melton Borough Council is responsible for collecting the waste produced by over 23,000 households. They are tasked by central government to increase the percentage of waste recycled. In order to achieve their targets, Melton Borough Council was able to secure educational funding from WRAP (a government funded agency).
Task
- To educate householders about what can and cannot be recycled
- To advise householders that Melton Borough Council have enforcement powers available to them to enable them to encourage householders who refuse to be educated
- To present the information in such a way that it would not get missed or ignored by householders
Solution
- To design and produce an educational leaflet using resources and guidelines produced by WRAP as part of their “Recycle Now” campaign
- To create a supplementary leaflet mimicking an enforcement notice and a certificate to act as a carrier for the educational leaflet
- The leaflets were packaged in a clear cellophane envelope, offering doorstep impact on delivery
Results
- 13,000 packs produced and distributed to householders who were not considered to be contributing sufficiently to the effort
- 12,000 additional recycling leaflets were produced and distributed to the remaining households to continue to educate those who were making efforts but were felt to require further education rather than shock tactics
- Mulberry Square received accolades from WRAP for their implementation of the “Recycle Now” guidelines
